(AP) ? President Barack Obama is extending a new proposal to Republicans that he hopes will break the political gridlock on budget negotiations, offering to cut corporate tax rates in exchange for job investments.

White House officials say just because they're at an impasse with congressional Republicans over a grand bargain on reducing the deficit doesn't mean they shouldn't look for other areas of agreement. So Obama plans to use a trip to an Amazon.com distribution center in Chattanooga, Tenn., on Tuesday to propose a "grand bargain for middle-class jobs."

Obama long has called for a cut in corporate tax rates, but previously insisted such business tax reform be coupled with an individual tax overhaul. He's dropping that demand and says instead that he's open to the corporate tax cut that that businesses crave. But he wants it to be coupled with a significant investment on some sort of job creation program, such as manufacturing, infrastructure or community colleges.

House Speaker John Boehner's office said Obama's proposals were hardly a compromise.

"This proposal allows President Obama to support President Obama's position on taxes and President Obama's position on spending, while leaving small businesses and American families behind," Boehner spokesman Michael Steel said.

Congressional Republicans have long insisted on tying corporate and individual tax reform so that small business owners who use the individual tax code would be offered cuts along with large corporations.

Senior administration officials described the corporate tax proposal as the first new economic idea Obama plans to offer in the coming months, with budget deadlines looming in the fall. Administration officials wouldn't put a price tag on the proposal or say how much would be a "significant" investment in jobs since the dollar figures would be part of negotiations with Congress. But in an example from this year's State of the Union address, Obama proposed $50 billion to put Americans to work repairing roads and bridges and other construction jobs.

The officials said money to pay for the jobs creation would come from a one-time revenue boost from measures such as changing depreciation rules or having a one-time fee on earnings held overseas.

"As part of his efforts to focus Washington on the middle class, today in Tennessee the president will call on Washington to work on a grand bargain focused on middle-class jobs by pairing reform of the business tax code with a significant investment in middle-class jobs," Obama senior adviser Dan Pfeiffer said.

Obama planned to make his remarks from an Amazon fulfillment center in Chattanooga, one of more than a dozen warehouses operated by the world's largest online retailer, which announced Monday that it would increase hiring. The company said it would add 7,000 new jobs, including 5,000 more at U.S. distribution centers that currently employ about 20,000 workers who pack and ship customer orders. Amazon.com Inc. has been spending heavily on order fulfillment to help its business grow.

Obama planned to tour the packing floor of the Chattanooga warehouse, which opened in September 2011. It is one of the company's largest and newest facilities, with more than 1 million square feet ? the size of more than 28 football fields full of merchandise.

The plant was the source of tax controversy when it opened; Amazon originally was granted an indefinite waiver on collecting sales tax in a deal to bring two distribution centers to Tennessee. The state's retailers were outraged that they were put at a competitive disadvantage, and Amazon has agreed to start collecting Tennessee sales tax next year.

The White House said Obama wasn't visiting Amazon because of the company's position on taxes, but because it's an example of a successful American business growing and creating more jobs.

Obama proposed last year to overhaul corporate taxes by lowering rates from the current 35 percent to 28 percent, with an even lower effective tax rate of 25 percent for manufacturers. The U.S. has one of the highest corporate tax rates in the world, but many businesses avoid the full cost by taking advantage of deductions, credits and exemptions that Obama wants to eliminate.

Obama wants to do away with corporate tax benefits like oil and natural gas industry subsidies, special breaks for the purchase of private jets and certain corporate tax shelters. He also wants to impose a minimum tax on foreign earnings, a move opposed by multinational corporations and perhaps the most contentious provision in the president's plan.

And the president has made little progress toward getting Republicans to sign on to a "grand bargain" of tax increases and spending cuts to reduce the deficit.

When Obama unveiled the corporate tax plan last year, congressional Republicans called for even deeper cuts for the business world. His campaign rival, Mitt Romney, wanted a 25 percent corporate tax rate.

Bill Walker: ?Bride bruised in wedding photo?

The former wife of an MSP has claimed a newly discovered wedding photograph shows the black eye he gave her two weeks before they got married.

Bill Walker?s first wife, Maureen Traquair, returned to Edinburgh Sheriff Court yesterday to give evidence for a second time after the photograph unexpectedly came to light.

She said the picture highlighted how her face was bruised on the day of their wedding in January 1967.

Mrs Traquair, 66, previously told the court she had to buy concealer after Walker punched her during an argument a fortnight before they wed.

The 71-year-old MSP for Dunfermline is accused of a string of attacks on his three ex-wives and a stepdaughter between 1967 and 1995.

His trial was adjourned on 12 July after five days of evidence and resumed yesterday.

The court heard that in the intervening period, Mrs Traquair?s sister had been searching for family photographs to jog the memory of their mother, who was in a care home suffering from dementia. Procurator-fiscal depute Les Brown said she had discovered the original black-and-white wedding picture by chance and had decided to hand it to the police.

Sheriff Katherine Mackie granted a Crown motion to recall Mrs Traquair to give additional evidence about the image after it was rediscovered. Mrs Traquair said she had been surprised to see the picture as she had destroyed her own photographs after divorcing Walker in 1970.

Evidence of the injuries she had sustained were clearly visible in the wedding photograph despite the concealer and foundation she had worn, she said.

Mrs Traquair said: ?I can see the bruising that still remains from the wound that I got. It?s a dark colour.? She told the court her mother had arranged her veil so she could cover up the marks on her face during the wedding ceremony.

Mr Walker?s lawyer, solicitor advocate Gordon Martin, asked whether the marks could be ?simply a shadow?.

But Mrs Traquair, who the court heard is an award-winning photographer, said there had been nothing present to cause such a shadow. She denied that the mark was a figment of her imagination. ?Other people have seen it as well,? she said.

Mr Walker, who sits at Holyrood as an independent after losing the SNP whip, denies 23 charges of assault and one breach of the peace. The politician has denied all of the charges against him and has lodged special defences of self-defence to three of the charges he faces.

The alleged offences are said to have occurred between January 1967 and January 1995, and taken place in a range of locations in Edinburgh, Stirling, Midlothian and Alloa, in Clackmannanshire. The trial is due to continue today.

Perodua Jaguh sedan 'leaked' - but is likely a fake - Paul Tan

Perodua_Jaguh

Hold on to your horses, folks. This isn?t quite the big revelation it appears to be. An alleged picture of the ?leaked? Perodua Jaguh sedan (above) has been spreading like wildfire on the Net, with many publications and websites, both international and local, reporting it to be the genuine article. It?s a sensational reveal if it is, but we have our reservations, so don?t get too excited just yet.

While the possibility of a Perodua sedan is very real indeed ? company officials have said that they?re studying the idea of going down the sedan route ? the leaked brochure seems less so. The car in question is tightly based on a Toyota Etios, with a Perodua face grafted on it. That?s not such a far-fetched dream by any means, as rumours of Perodua rebadging/re-engineering that model for local consumption is a familiar one.

The brochure?s bottom plane of select highlights is less convincing, though. The ?4 star MyVAP safety rating? is questionable enough (ASEAN NCAP has now superseded the old car safety assessment programme), but look further and you?ll see that there?s also mention of a ?sliding 2nd row seats?. On a sedan. Alarm bells, anyone?

Another damning evidence is the fact that we?ve seen this list of features before ? on the promotional material of the Perodua Alza Advanced Version. Take a look yourself: we have a scanned copy of the said (and very real) brochure here.

So there you go. This is not the Perodua sedan you?re looking for. But it sure looks good, though, doesn?t it?

Arrest made after online threats to UK campaigner

Social media

British police on Sunday arrested a man in connection with online threats made toward a feminist campaigner, a case which has ignited calls for social media platforms to institute stronger protections against verbal abuse.

Caroline Criado-Perez says she has been facing a deluge of abuse ? including threats to rape and kill her ? over Twitter during the past several days. She said the threats started after her campaign to get a woman's picture on a U.K. bank note succeeded and resulted in the Bank of England's announcement last week that author Jane Austen will feature on England's new 10-pound notes.

In Britain, hundreds of people are prosecuted every year for Facebook posts, tweets, texts and emails deemed menacing, indecent, offensive or obscene. But while there have been several cases of online threats directed at sports figures and politicians, the verbal assault against Criado-Perez appears to have ignited an unrivalled response and backlash against Twitter itself.

The graphic and offensive threats come as combatting the scourge of violence against women has taken on a more public sense of urgency worldwide, when tales of gang rapes in India and Brazil circulated around the world. Earlier this year, more than 130 nations agreed on a U.N. blueprint to combat violence against women, "one of the gravest violations of human rights in the world," according to Michelle Bachelet, the head of the U.N. women's agency.

The head of the World Health Organization, Dr. Margaret Chen, too, called violence against women "a global health problem of epidemic proportions" when the first major global review of violence against women came out in June ? a description that Criado-Perez drew on when writing in the New Statesman about the abuse directed against her. She urged Chen to "take a look at Twitter."

Already, Criado-Perez's experience has set off a campaign and petition to press Twitter to take more action to combat online threats.

Shadow Home Secretary Yvette Cooper urged Twitter to carry out a full review of its policies on abusive threats and crimes, and a petition urging Twitter to introduce a "button" that would make it easier to report abusive Tweets has garnered 12,000 signatures.

On Sunday, British police arrested a 21-year-old man, who wasn't immediately identified, in relation to Criado-Perez's case.

She posted on Twitter that she was at a police station to make a statement and had many more threats to report ? followed by the hashtag "shouting back."

Lung cancer screening only for some smokers, ages

An influential group of government advisers has endorsed lung cancer screening for the first time ? but not for everybody. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force is proposing annual CT scans, a type of X-ray, for certain current and former smokers.

To be considered for screening, the task force says people should:

?Be ages 55 through 79.

?Have smoked a pack of cigarettes a day for 30 years or the equivalent, such as two packs a day for 15 years.

People who should not be screened include:

?Those younger than 55 or older than 79.

?Those who smoked less or less often than those described above.

?Those who quit smoking 15 or more years ago.

?Those too sick or frail to withstand treatment for lung cancer.

MPs protest over Arctic oil drilling

A group of MPs has labelled?the UK "complacent" over oil and gas drilling in the Arctic, calling for an environmental sanctuary instead.

The Environmental Audit Select Committee?consists of 16 MPs with a remit to examine how government departments' policies will affect the environment and sustainable development. It has raised concerns over the failure for oil companies to prove they could clean up spills in the harsh Arctic environment.

The committee pointed to a report from the International Energy Agency?that warned that two thirds of existing fossil fuel reserves must stay in the ground if global temperature changes are to be kept below 2C - the agreed threshold above which climatic effects are projected to become disastrous.

As such, the committee says, it's irresponsible to seek out more reserves the the increasingly-ice-free?Arctic. "What happens in the Arctic will affect the UK, impacting our weather systems and biodiversity," said chairwoman Joan Walley.

The committee has called for a halt on drilling for oil and gas in the Arctic until safety is improved, a standard pan-Arctic spill response, unlimited liability for companies and an Arctic environmental sanctuary.

However, the government said it disagreed with the committee. A spokesperson said: "We are very aware of the possible environmental impact of an oil spill in the Arctic and support the use of the highest drilling standards. However, the UK is not an Arctic state and it is not for us to tell other countries which resources they can and cannot extract from their own sovereign territory."

He added: "The UK does have strong environmental, economic, scientific and political interests in the Arctic and this summer we will be publishing an Arctic policy framework for the first time."

The Google Maps of the Week

Yarr, Pirate Maps uses the Google Maps API to create a distinct pirate themed map, complete with animated waves, birds and pirate ships. There may not be much serious intent behind the map but I am impressed by the results and the imaginative use of the Google Maps API elevation service and the Google Places library.

One impressive feature on this map is how the ship and wave map markers are only placed in the sea, the sea-gulls only appear near the shore and trees only appear in parks. The elevation service of the Maps API is being used to determine sea and shore locations. The Google Places API is being used to find the locations of parks.

Alex Wellerstein's NukeMap has proved to be a very popular Google Maps mashup. The application allows users to view the likely effect of different sized nuclear explosions on any location in the world, using Google Maps.

Much of its popularity comes from the fun of blowing places up on a map. I mean what could be better than that?

Blowing things up in 3d - that's what. Alex Wellerstein's new app, NukeMap3D, uses the Google Earth browser plug-in to allow users to detonate nuclear bombs on their chosen location and view the effect in glorious 3d.

Now you can view the effect of your dastardly deeds mushrooming above the 3d buildings of the cities you target. If you select the 'animate mushroom cloud' option you can even view a slow motion animation of your bomb exploding.

SaferRoute is an interesting attempt to create a route planner that avoids areas with a record of high crime. Using crime data from Lothian and Borders Police Reports, this Google Maps app will return travel directions, for Edinburgh, Scotland, that try and avoid crime hotpsots in the city.

If you enter two addresses into the app you will be shown a Google Map with two routes highlighted. The safest route is shown in green on the map and the fastest route is shown in red. Beneath the map turn-by-turn directions are also given, with each street on the journey given a safety rating.?

Changes to Miss America parade irks some longtime supporters

ATLANTIC CITY ? When Miss America returns to Atlantic City this year, so too will the "Show Us Your Shoes" parade.

But there will be changes to the traditional march along the boardwalk and that has irked some locals, according to The Press of Atlantic City.

?You?ve got to have the people with sand in their shoes. It?s not going to be what it always was,? Atlantic City resident Hariann Bernstein, who helped organize a viewing area at New York Avenue, told the newspaper. ?I think they think they?re going to do Broadway on the Boardwalk.?

The Miss America Organization has hired an Emmy-award winning producer to help coordinate the parade this year. In years past, a group of locals organized the parade.

It will also be more expensive to participate.

The newspaper reported that during the last parade in Atlantic City in 2004 it cost $200 to enter a float in the parade. This year, that fee will be at least $2,000.

Historic SF church plans memorial space for pets

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? A historic Roman Catholic church in San Francisco is planning to build a repository where pet owners will be able to keep the ashes of cats, dogs, and other dearly departed animals.

The National Shrine of St. Francis of Assisi is seeking donations for an 850-square-foot columbarium that would be the first in the city for animal remains, the San Francisco Chronicle reported Friday (http://bit.ly/12pU3AC).

Plans for the space include a stained-glass rendering of St. Francis, who is the patron saint of both animals and San Francisco. Urns containing the ashes of the animals enshrined there will be displayed behind glass while their photographs will be shown on a video screen.

The design also calls for a Hall of Honor for service animals that worked with disabled people and in law enforcement.

The 164-year-old church's rector, the Rev. Harold Snider, says the columbarium will be available to pet owners regardless of their religious affiliations.

"You don't have to be Christian or Catholic to love your pets and respect their memories," Snider said.

Steve Cady, who has been attending services at the church for about 15 years, said he is comforted knowing his 4 ?-year-old terrier Frankie, whom like the church is named after St. Francis, will have a good home when the dogs dies.

"He's been God's blessing for me and the many people who've gotten to know him," Cady said.

The repository will have enough room for the remains of 1,000 animals. Church leaders hope to have the project finished by spring.

    Italy gets its first zonkey

A zebra and a donkey at an Italian nature reserve are now the proud parents of a zonkey, a hybrid between the two species.?

    A zonkey, of course.

A zonkey was born to a female donkey and a male zebra in an Italian nature reserve earlier this week. The owner of the Florence reserve, Serena Aglietti, has called it the only one of its kind in the state, ANSA reported.

The unusual breeding wasn?t intentional. The zebra cleared a fence that had been put up between him and his romantic interest to ward against exactly what happened: the birth of Ippo, who has stripped black-white legs, a brown middle, and a donkey-shaped face.

The donkey, Jade, and the zebra, Martin, were brought to the nature reserve after being rescued from a failed zoo, Science World Report said.

The reserve is also home to parrots and a camel, which seem unlikely candidates for giving birth to future donkels, zebrels, paronkeys, zebrots, or pramelots. But don?t count on an end to Martin?s shenanigans: The reserve also has racehorse ? one that, in fact, is a potential mate for a zebra.

The zebra is known for eccentric choice in mates, selecting reproductive partners not just from within its own species but from the entire Equus genus. Those animals are collectively known as zebroids, but also have specific names depending on the hybrid: zonys blend pony and zebra, while zorses unite a horse and a zebra. The name also depends on the sex of the animal giving birth: had Martin the zebra been female and Jade the donkey been male, their offspring would have been called a donkra.?

But the creative fun stops there. The resulting hybrids are usually sterile, precluding the possibility of ending up with a zonkeyzorse or, further down the line, a zonkeyzonyzorse.

Zonkeys have also been born in Germany, China, and the United States. The American Zonkey, born in Georgia in 2010, is called Pippi Longstocking.

Drum of depleted uranium found at Florida airport

MIAMI?Part of the Opa-locka Executive Airport in South Florida had to be temporarily evacuated after a 55-gallon drum containing depleted uranium aircraft parts was found.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue spokesman Arnold Piedrahita Jr. reports that the unsealed drum was found Thursday near a dismantled plane at the airport. A hazmat team from Miami International Airport went to the site, but only minimal levels of radiation were detected.

Officials initially cleared a 150-foot perimeter around the drum, but that circle was later reduced to 5 feet.

Airport spokesman Marc Henderson said no flights were disrupted and the airport never closed.

Most depleted uranium is a byproduct of the production of enriched uranium, which is commonly used in nuclear reactors and weapons. It has significantly less radiation than natural uranium.

The development fueled the likelihood of clashes as tens of thousands of supporters and opponents of the Islamist leader massed for rival rallies. A poster with the photo of Morsi is seen top center. (AP) ? An Egyptian doctor at a field hospital says at least 16 supporters of ousted President Mohammed Morsi have been killed near a Cairo demonstration following clashes with security forces.

Yehia Mikkia says the overnight night clashes have overwhelmed the hospital operating from the sit-in where the protesters have been camped for over three weeks. He said early Saturday at least 16 were killed.

Police fired tear gas to disperse hundreds of Morsi supporters near the sit-in, setting off clashes that lasted for hours? in a possible sign of a new intolerance for marches that block city streets.

The clashes erupted following a day when millions took to the streets answering a call from the army chief, who said he wanted a mandate to stop "potential terrorism" by Morsi supporters.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

Called out by the army, the largest crowds in 2 1/2 years of upheaval filled Egypt's streets Friday, while ousted President Mohammed Morsi was formally placed under investigation on a host of allegations including murder and conspiracy with the Palestinian militant group Hamas.

Morsi's supporters also showed no signs of backing down, though they turned out in vastly smaller numbers. The demonstrations in Cairo were mostly peaceful into the evening. But by late Friday night in Cairo, A field hospital doctor said seven protesters were killed and hundreds injured.

In the city of Alexandria, seven people were killed and over 100 were injured in clashes between supporters and opponents of Morsi, officials said.

The announcement by prosecutors of the investigation against Morsi, which is likely to pave the way to a formal indictment and eventually a trial, was the first word on his legal status since he was deposed by the military July 3. Since then, the Islamist leader has been held incommunicado in a secret location.

Both sides tried to show how much public support they enjoy. But the millions who turned out for the pro-army demonstrations overwhelmed the streets in multiple cities in Egypt, including some that rarely seen any rallies since the 2011 uprising.

Throngs of people turned out in Cairo's Tahrir Square and in other cities, answering a call by army chief Gen. Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, who urged them to give him a mandate to stop "potential terrorism" by supporters of Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood.

Portraits of the smiling el-Sissi in sunglasses dominated the crowd in Tahrir and one near the presidential palace across town. Posters with his picture were emblazoned with the words "the love of the people," and demonstrators wore small photos of him around their necks or carried a picture of his face on an Egyptian one-pound note.

Security was heavy after el-Sissi vowed to protect the rallies from attacks by rivals. Tanks guarded one entrance to Tahrir and police were stationed at other parts.

"The army is here to protect the people. They don't lie," said Ezzat Fahmi, a 38-year-old in the crowd. He said el-Sissi called the rallies "so the entire world can see that the Egyptian people don't want the Brotherhood anymore."

El-Sissi's plea came at a time when the political standoff with Morsi's supporters showed no sign of resolution. It raised speculation that he may be planning a crackdown on the toppled president's allies, who have held a sit-in outside the Rabaa al-Adawiyah Mosque in Cairo and near daily rallies elsewhere in the capital for three weeks.

The rallies have often turned violent, with more than 180 people killed this month. The Morsi supporters and opponents blame each other for the bloodshed, and people in both camps have been seen carrying weapons.

The unrest, as well as claims that Islamist groups are stockpiling weapons and escalating attacks against troops in the Sinai, were used by the country's new military-backed rulers as a basis for demanding popular support.

The interim leader, Adly Mansour, told the private TV station al-Hayat that his government seeks to include everyone, but it will not accept lawlessness, blocked roads and attacks on state institutions. He urged the pro-Morsi protesters to go home, promising they won't be pursued or arrested.

"I can't negotiate with whoever has committed a crime. But those who were duped or those who want to belong to Egyptian society, we welcome them," he said. But he added: "The state must interfere (against lawlessness) firmly."

Not long after the speech, police moved in quickly to break up a crowd of Morsi supporters marching on a main overpass in Cairo near the pro-Morsi sit-in, firing tear gas. Clashes with security forces ensued as protesters tried to extend their sit-in beyond the mosque into a main boulevard.

Witnesses said police forces fired birdshots and live ammunition at the crowd in clashes that lasted for hours. Field hospital doctor Alaa Mohammed said seven people were killed, most of them shot in the head and chest, including a 19-year-old. He said two other protesters were in critical condition, and hundreds were injured.

Interior Minister Mohammed Ibrahim told a private TV station that the sit-in at the Rabaa mosque will be removed by legal means. He did not elaborate but said residents of the area have filed police reports against the encampment.

Police spokesman Hani Abdel-Latif told The Associated Press that 53 pro-Morsi supporters were arrested around Egypt on Friday in possession of weapons, ranging from knives to homemade guns.

El-Sissi deposed Morsi after four days of huge protests by millions of Egyptians demanding the removal of the country's first freely elected president following months of disagreements between him and the largely secular opposition.

The accusations against Morsi are connected to a prison break during the 2011 uprising against autocrat Hosni Mubarak. Gunmen attacked the Wadi el-Natroun prison northwest of Cairo, freeing inmates, including Morsi and about 30 other figures from the Muslim Brotherhood. The prosecutors allege Morsi and the Brotherhood worked with Hamas to carry out the break, in which 14 guards were killed.

Egypt's MENA news agency said Morsi was being investigated over allegations of collaborating with Hamas "to carry out anti-state acts, attacking police stations and army officers and storming prisons, setting fire to one prison and enabling inmates to flee, including himself, as well as premeditated killing of officers, soldiers and prisoners."

In recent months, a court in the Suez Canal city of Ismailia has heard testimony from prison officials and intelligence officers indicating Morsi and his Brotherhood colleagues were freed when gunmen led by Hamas operatives stormed the prison.

Morsi supporters called the investigation politically motivated. Muslim Brotherhood spokesman Ahmed Aref said the move showed "the complete bankruptcy of the leaders of the bloody coup."

Brotherhood officials have said they escaped when local residents broke into the prison to free their relatives and that they had no knowledge of it ahead of time.

Hamas has consistently denied any involvement in the jailbreak. A spokesman for the militant group, Sami Abu Zuhri, condemned Morsi's detention order as "an attempt to drag Hamas into the Egyptian conflict."

U.S. State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki expressed deep concern about reports of Morsi's detention.

"I can't speak to the specific charges. But we do believe that it is important that there be a process to work toward his release," she said. "Clearly, this process should respect the personal security of him and take into account the volatile political situation in Egypt and that's where our focus is. We have conveyed publicly and privately that his personal security and treatment is of utmost importance."

MENA said Morsi has now been formally detained for 15 days pending the completion of the investigation. It did not say whether he would now be moved to a facility where he could receive family visits.

The head of the prison authority, Maj. Gen. Mostafa Baz, said he has not yet received orders for Morsi's transfer to any of his facilities. The news agency indicated that Morsi has already been interrogated.

Egyptian institutions lined up behind el-Sissi's call for Friday's pro-military rallies, reflecting the extent of antagonism against the Brotherhood's hold on power in the past year.

State TV and most of the private broadcasters showed the pro-army rallies in various cities around Egypt, including aerial footage provided by military helicopters. Nationalist songs and parts of el-Sissi's speech in which he called for support were played throughout the day.

On Friday evening, TV networks stopped running soap operas that are wildly popular during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. In a further show of support, church bells rang out during evening prayers when hundreds of thousands of protesters broke their Ramadan fasts. Interim Prime Minister Hazem el-Belbawi participated in the rally held outside the presidential palace.

A giant banner stretched across an entrance to Tahrir Square, the cradle of the 2011 uprising. It read: "The people, the source of all power, mandate the army and police to purge terrorism."

Three tanks guarded another street leading into the square, and helicopters swooped overhead.

"We have no parliament. Today is a quick referendum to support el-Sissi against the Brotherhood, whose members are terrorists," said Mohammed el-Shaer, who stood in Tahrir holding a portrait of the general in a golden frame. El-Shaer held the hand of his 10-year-old daughter, who was dressed in a military fatigues.

He called the rally a "popular referendum" on el-Sissi.

In eastern Cairo, tens of thousands of Morsi supporters at the Rabaa mosque sit-in chanted against el-Sissi and vowed to continue their push for the president's reinstatement. Others marched through some neighborhoods of Cairo.

Their rallies were mostly covered on TV by Al-Jazeera Mubasher Misr, and pro-Morsi activists emailed journalists videos and links to a live feed.

"When I first heard el-Sissi's call I was anxious," said 39-year-old Sayed el-Rawi, protesting outside the mosque. "But today, we saw that his speech encouraged more people to go down in the streets. ... They won't be able to break up the sit in."

The rival demonstrations are only deepening the country's divisions since Morsi's fall.

Clashes and fistfights broke out between both camps in Alexandria, with seven people killed and over 100 injured, according to health official Ibrahim el-Roubi. Some pro-Morsi supporters took cover inside a major mosque, leading to a standoff with opponents who besieged the place, locking them inside for hours.

Skirmishes also broke out in the Mediterranean coastal cities of Damietta and Mahalla, in the southern city of Luxor, and a Cairo neighborhood that left 64 injured, Health Ministry spokesman Khaled el-Khateeb and local security officials said.

It remains unclear what steps the military is planning after Friday's show of strength ? whether it would try to break up sit-ins by Morsi supporters or attempt to arrest more than a dozen Brotherhood figures who have warrants against them.

On the front page of the state-owned Al-Akhbar newspaper, the word "wanted" in English was plastered across photos of a number of Brotherhood leaders and allies who are facing warrants. Many of them are believed to be taking refuge at the Rabaa al-Adawiyah sit-in.

The prosecutors' announcement on Morsi also could signal a greater move to go after the Brotherhood in courts. Besides Morsi, five other senior figures from the group have been detained.

Hassan Mohammed, a 30-year old teacher who came from southern Egypt to join the pro-Morsi rally, remained steadfast.

"Even if we are going to die, me and my family, we won't leave this place before our president comes back. Even if it takes seven years. We are ready to be martyrs in the name of religion and the nation," he said.

Israel's Netanyahu urges greater pressure on Iran

JERUSALEM (AFP) ? Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday urged greater pressure on Iran over its nuclear programme as he met Japan's Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida in Jerusalem.

"I think we need to increase the pressure on Iran. Only by doing this will there be real changes in the attitude of that country," Netanyahu's office was quoted him as saying at the meeting.

"Israel and Japan both face states that are developing dangerous nuclear weapons programmes," he said in reference also to North Korea.

"We know perfectly well the threat that irrational and extremist regimes, who wish to gain nuclear arms and ballistic missiles, pose to the security of our states and countries the world over."

Netanyahu on Sunday renewed his threat to take unilateral military action to halt Iran's atomic drive, disparagingly referring to new Iran president Hassan Rowhani as "a wolf in sheep's clothing" who would "smile and build a bomb".

"We're closer than the United States. We're more vulnerable. And therefore, we'll have to address this question of how to stop Iran, perhaps before the United States does," Netanyahu told US television station CBS.

"They're edging up to the red line. They haven't crossed it yet," the Israeli premier said, referring to the point at which Iran would be able to make its first nuclear weapon.

"They're getting closer and closer to the bomb. And they have to be told in no uncertain terms that that will not be allowed to happen."

Rowhani brushed off the threats of military action, saying such warnings only made him "laugh," it was reported on Wednesday.

Israel is the Middle East's sole but undeclared nuclear power.

Iran for years has been at loggerheads with world powers over its nuclear drive, which Western nations and Israel believe is aimed at developing an atomic weapons capability. Tehran insists the programme is entirely peaceful.

Pope urges Catholic faithful to shun materialism

APARECIDA, Brazil (AP) ? Pope Francis made an emotional plea Wednesday for Roman Catholics to shun materialism in the first public Mass of his initial international trip as pontiff, then met with drug addicts and denounced the "dealers of death" who fuel their suffering.

On his first full day of activities in Brazil, Francis traveled from one of the most important shrines in Latin America, Our Lady of Aparecida, to what he called a "shrine of human suffering" ? a hospital in Rio de Janeiro that treats substance abusers.

Both encounters had a common theme that the humble pope has stressed during his young papacy: a denunciation of the "ephemeral idols" of money and power and a need for the Catholic Church to focus on the poor and outcasts of society.

Francis started his day traveling to Aparecida, where thousands packed into the huge Basilica of the Shrine of Our Lady of Aparecida in an agricultural region of verdant fields between Rio and Sao Paolo. Tens of thousands more braved a cold rain outside to catch a glimpse of the first pope from the Americas returning to a shrine of great meaning to the continent and to Francis himself.

Before the Mass, Francis stood in silent prayer in front of the 15-inch statue of the Virgin of Aparecida, the "Black Mary," his eyes tearing up as he breathed heavily. He later carried a replica of it in his arms, visibly moved at the gift he had been given. Francis has entrusted his papacy to the Virgin Mary and, like many Catholics in Latin America, places great importance in devotion to Mary.

After his Mass, the pope blessed the tens of thousands gathered outside the basilica and announced that he would return to Aparecida in 2017, the year that marks the 300th anniversary of a fisherman finding the Black Mary statue in a nearby river.

Back in Rio, Francis arrived in a closed car at the simple white and yellow St. Francis of Assisi hospital ? named for Francis' namesake, the 13th century friar who renounced a wealthy, dissolute lifestyle to embrace a life of poverty and simplicity. The pope bounded out of the car into a cold rain, not waiting for an umbrella, and greeted a group of people in wheelchairs and well-wishers.

Before the pope spoke, former drug addicts stood up and told their stories ? and received an embrace from the pope who listened intently.

The pope then blasted the "dealers of death" who sell drugs and said that the "scourge of drug-trafficking, that favors violence and sows the seeds of suffering and death, requires of society as a whole an act of courage."

"A reduction in the spread and influence of drug addiction will not be achieved by a liberalization of drug use, as is currently being proposed in various parts of Latin America," the pontiff said. "Rather, it is necessary to confront the problems underlying the use of these drugs, by promoting greater justice, educating young people in the values that build up life in society, accompanying those in difficulty and giving them hope for the future."

The rejection of drug legalization ideas raised by some leaders in this region was an unusually political call from Francis, who has tended to steer clear of making pronouncements on touchy issues. He has instead let local bishops speak out themselves.

During his homily in Aparecida, Francis urged Catholics to keep their values of faith, generosity and fraternity.

"It is true that nowadays, to some extent, everyone, including our young people, feels attracted by the many idols which take the place of God and appear to offer hope: money, success, power, pleasure," he said. "Often a growing sense of loneliness and emptiness in the hearts of many people leads them to seek satisfaction in these ephemeral idols."

The church is struggling in Latin America to keep Catholics from straying to evangelical and Pentecostal churches that often promise help in finding material wealth, an alluring attraction in a poverty-wracked continent. Francis' top priority as pope has been to reach out to the world's poor and inspire Catholic leaders to go to slums and other peripheries to preach.

It was no coincidence, then, that the first major event of his first foreign trip as pope was a Mass in Aparecida. The shrine, which draws 11 million pilgrims a year, hosted a critical 2007 meeting of Latin American bishops who, under the guidance of then-Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, drafted a mission statement on how to reinvigorate the faith on the continent.

"I've seen people in my own congregation leave because the evangelicals offer them something new and exciting, and the Catholic Church was seen as kind of old and stuffy," Marcia Cecilia de Souza, owner of a private school in the southern state of Santa Catarina, said as she searched for newspaper to stuff into her soaked leather boots. "Francis is such an inspiration, so humble and giving, I think he's going to bring people back into the fold."

Unlike the scenes of chaos that greeted Francis upon his Monday arrival in Rio, when a mob of faithful swarmed his motorcade from the airport, the security situation in Aparecida was far more controlled. Chest-high barriers kept people far from his car. Soldiers in camouflage, emergency crews in raincoats and other uniformed security forces stood guard along his route while his bodyguards walked along the side of his vehicle.

Not all were pleased with the increased security.

"They put up a Berlin Wall between us and the pope and we couldn't get anywhere near him. You could tell he wanted to get close to us, but the police really insisted on this separation," said Joao Franklin, from Minas Gerais state. "I felt really excluded by all these barriers and don't see the need for them."

Nacilda de Oliveira Silva, a maid perched at the front of the crowd, was barely tall enough to see over the metal barrier.

"I have been up for almost 24 hours, most of that time on my feet and in the rain and the cold. But I don't feel any pain. I feel bathed in God's glory, and that's because of the pope. For me, it's the same thing as seeing Jesus pass by. That's how moved I feel."

Francis is in Brazil for World Youth Day, a church event that brings together young Catholics from around the world roughly every three years. Approximately 350,000 young pilgrims signed up to officially take part in the events.
