Natural Family Planning, or How Fosgood Finally Got Pregnant | The ...

So, I was finally ready to get pregnant. This was pre-internet so I actually had to find books on the subject or talk to people for information. I decided to try natural family planning to optimize the chances by tracking when I was most likely to be ovulating.

For those of you not familiar with this method, it has been around for centuries and is the only one approved by many religious organizations who forbid any other method of contraception. The premise is that by charting your cycle using a calendar and the change in cervical mucus and temperature, you are able to predict when you ovulate and can abstain from intercourse during that time. So armed with my new thermometer and fertility tracking chart, I got to work. Every morning for months, I would grab for the thermometer as soon as I was awake enough to remember and diligently record my morning temp on my chart. In theory, your body temp goes up a bit before you ovulate and stays that way until your next period. This never seemed to happen, but I did discover that my waking temperature, even in Florida, was about 95 to 96 degrees. No wonder I fell in love with the warmth of Florida when I visited from upstate New York during spring break in February. I?m just a few degrees above qualifying to be reptilian.

I also checked my cervical mucus every morning ? a process not for the squeamish. Besides stirring your finger around inside your vagina gathering mucus, you then have to examine the product between the inserted finger and another one to check the consistency. Here?s what our Planned Parenthood pamphlet Tracking Your Fertility Pattern to Prevent Pregnancy?has to say:

??Normal mucus is cloudy and tacky. It will become clear and slippery a few days before you ovulate. It will also stretch between your fingers. This happens on your most fertile days. These will be the tacky and cloudy and wet and slippery days after your period.?

Apparently my cervical mucus is also abnormal. I could rarely see that drastic a change and my husband got really tired of trying to help me decide if my mucus was cloudy, tacky, clear or sticky.

Despite my best efforts and 11 months of careful notes and charting, no pregnancy. Inching my way into my thirties at a time when 35 was considered old to begin a family, I became a bit panicky and decided to visit a fertility specialist. Since my husband was even more ancient than myself and heading into his mid-forties, we figured maybe his sperm count was the problem ? turns out his count was about double what was normal. After carefully examining my charts, the doctor suggested we have more sex earlier in the month. We had been saving ourselves for the middle of the month around day 14 just to make sure we had a full load when I was most likely to ovulate. But the very next month, despite my husband claiming I was trying to kill him, we conceived.

On the other hand, one of my midwives had used this method to prevent pregnancy. She had even abstained the entire week before when she was supposed to be in ?the danger zone? since she already was the mother of 3 and not planning any more. By the time I delivered, she was 5 months pregnant with number 4.

Before you rely on this method, which is reported to be 74 ? 99% effective, ask yourself, ?How much do I want to become pregnant?? If the answer is absolutely not, I would strongly suggest you look for a more reliable method.

To Gate or Not to Gate, That Is the B-to-B Content Marketing Question

There?s a spirited debate in B-to-B marketing about whether it?s best to give away information (aka ?content,? like white papers and research reports) to all comers, versus requiring web visitors to provide some information in exchange for a content download.? In other words, to gate your content or not to gate.? The debate involves aspects of both ROI and philosophy. ?Myself, I lean toward the ?gate it? camp, and here?s why.

I know that plenty of very smart and well-respected Internet marketing experts line up with dear old Stewart Brand, founder of the Whole Earth Catalog, who famously said in 1984 that information ?wants to be free.? The underlying assumption there is that people buy from companies that they trust?a valid point, to be sure.? Casting a net through free?unimpeded?distribution of content encourages both trust and, perhaps more importantly, wide dispersal and sharing of information.? You?ll get to a much bigger audience, who will be educated on the solutions to their business problems, will be grateful for the free info and, one hopes, will think of you when they?re ready to buy.? So far, so good.

The problem is that this model?which lives under the umbrella concept known as ?inbound marketing??leaves marketers in a serious quandary.? We don?t have any way of knowing who is reading our informative, educational and helpful content.? We are left sitting on our thumbs, unable to take any proactive steps toward building relationships with these potential prospects.? All we can do is wait for them to contact us and, we hope, ask us to participate in an RFP process, or, more likely, give them more info and more answers to their questions.? Is that any way to sustain and grow a business relationship?not to mention meet a revenue target?? In my view, it leaves too much to chance.

Let?s look at the numbers.? The ROI model for inbound marketing says that distributing the content to a wide audience will eventually result in more sales than gating the content and marketing proactively to a smaller universe.? Let?s look at how these numbers might actually work:

To start the conversation, say that wide distribution would put your content in front of 10,000 prospects, via free downloads and pass-along.

In contrast, we might similarly assume that by gating, and requiring some contact information in exchange for the content download, we would only get 1% of that distribution: 100 prospects.? These are now legitimate inquirers, and we can conduct outbound communications to them.? By applying typical campaign conversion rates, we could predict that of 100 inquiries, 20% will qualify?producing 20 qualified leads.? Of those, we?ll be able to contact 50% (or 10), and of them 20% will convert, resulting in 2 sales.

But how many sales will we get from the 10,000 with whom have no direct connection?? It?s hard to say.? When inquiries come in, we can ask where they heard of us, and certainly some will say they read the white paper, or whatever content we put into circulation.? But this data tends to be unreliable.? Inquirers usually don?t remember how they heard of you, or they just make up an answer to get the question out of the way.

This is exactly why business marketers debate the subject with such vigor.? We have data, and thus proof, on the gating side.? But we only have conjecture on the other.? So it boils down to which side you believe. ?It?s tough to do sustainable marketing on faith.

Myself, I grew up as a marketer in the world of measurable direct and database marketing.? So it?s no surprise that I favor the gating side of the fence.? I like marketing campaigns that provide predictable results.? Where I can stand up in court and show a history of my campaign response rates, conversion rates, and cost-per-lead numbers.? And most important, where I can reasonably expect to deliver a steady stream of qualified leads to my sales counterparts, who are relying on me to help them meet their quotas.

So that?s my argument for gating content in B-to-B marketing.? I understand the logic of the other side.? And I see clearly situations where it makes sense to let the information run free?as a teaser, for example, to persuade prospects to come and get the richer information that is so useful that they?ll be falling all over themselves to give me their name, title, company name and email address.? But what about you?? Where do you sit in this debate?? It?s a biggie.

In fact, everyone must ask him-herself ?KO-HUM?- Who Am I? And, it is told in Higher Mystical Scriptures of India: IF one seeks thus in all humility, faithfully following Yogic (Divine Umity) Instructions of one?s Guru, The ANSWER comes. In Self-Realization. As ?SO-HUM? - That I Am. AS is ?That?, so I AM.

Or, ?I? am THAT ? i ?: AM.

NYC examines sanitation records in search for Patz remains

Investigators are trying to determine whether they can track the remains of 6-year-old Etan Patz now that a suspect has made claims about where he tossed the boy's body in Manhattan in 1979.

Police contacted sanitation officials last week, when Pedro Hernandez was arrested, asking if the department has records dating back that far showing which trucks might have collected trash from buildings in the area, the Department of Sanitation told NBC 4 New York on Monday.?Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said Hernandez has told police that he put the boy's body in a trash bag and left it in an alley a few blocks from the SoHo bodega where he claimed to have strangled the boy.

It was the first day?Patz had ever been allowed to walk alone to the school bus stop. He never made it, and his disappearance mystified the city for decades.

Sanitation spokesman?Vito Turso told NBC?4 New York that the city does have handwritten log books about which trucks picked up trash in certain locations, and records of where those loads were dumped.

Turso said if city trucks collected the bag with Patz's body, it could have been taken by barge to the former Fresh Kills landfill on Staten Island. It also could have been transported to an incinerator that used to burn trash near Gansevoort Street on the west side of Manhattan.

Turso said there was also the possibility that the bag would have been collected as commercial refuse by a private hauler. In that case, NYPD would have to identify the store and trace the hauler. That trash, Turso said, could have gone to Fresh Kills, the former Fountain?Avenue landfill in Brooklyn, or some other private landfill.

"We await further word from?NYPD,"?Turso said.

The Department of Sanitation also has records that show where in its landfills trash was dumped, by date and location. That could help narrow a potential dig for remains, if police decided to pursue one.

Hernandez, 51, was a stock clerk at the bodega at the time the boy disappeared. Police said he told them he lured Patz to the store with the promise of a soda, and then killed him in the basement.

He was charged Friday with second-degree murder and has not entered a plea.

His lawyer, Harvey Fishbein, told the court that Hernandez is a schizophrenic and has had both auditory and visual hallucinations. He has requested a hearing to determine his client's mental fitness.

After a solid opening 200 meters, Berry picked it up as he hit the final turn and cleared the entire field heading on to the back stretch. He maintained his speed over the last 50 meters to run the fastest time in the NCAA this season ? 44.86 seconds.

The sophomore from Seattle had set the school record last year at the Pac-12 championships with a time of 44.91.

?I just wanted to get back in race form and run my race and go hard the last 150 meters,? Berry said. ?I wasn?t trying to break a record today, but I?ll take it and can hopefully build on it.?

In the women?s 400 quarterfinals, the Ducks? Phyllis Francis charged hard over the last 50 meters to win her heat in a season-best 52.36 and move on to the NCAA Championships next week. Chizoba Okodogbe was fourth in that heat in a season-best 53.03 and advanced on time. Devin Gosberry was sixth in her heat in a season-best 53.87 but did not advance.

UO sophomore English Gardner flew out of the blocks in the women?s 100 and eased to victory in 11.06 to advance. She had a sizable lead 60 meters into the race before gliding home with the victory.

Also in the 100, senior Lauryn Newson took sixth in her heat in 11.62, and senior Amber Purvis was ninth in her 100 heat in 11.70.

In the men?s 100, freshman Arthur Delaney was fifth in his heat in 10.41, and junior Joeal Hotchkins tied for sixth in his heat in 10.39. Neither runner advanced.

All five Oregon runners did advance from the 800.

Elijah Greer had another commanding performance in the men?s 800 to win his race.

He stayed in the pack through the first lap, before moving around the outside to take the lead with 250 meters to go. No one could cover as the junior from Lake Oswego won in 1:48.38.

Boru Guyota also earned a trip to Iowa with a fifth-place showing in his heat. His time, 1:48.98, was the 12th and final qualifier.

For the women, the Ducks had a runner-up finish in the first heat by Laura Roesler and a 2-3 finish from Anne Kesselring and Claudia Francis in the second heat to advance.

Roesler was in a tight race won by Nachelle Mackie of Brigham Young in 2:02.64. Roesler was next in a season-best 2:04.48.

In the second heat, Kesselring ran a conservative race up front before finishing second in 2:06.42.

Freshman Claudia Francis, meanwhile, had to charge around the curve and then put on a final kick over the last 20 meters to claim the third spot in 2:06.55.

The women wrapped up the night in impressive fashion, advancing Lanie Thompson, Kimber Mattox and Taylor Wallace in the steeplechase.

Thompson ran with the lead pack in heat two the entire race, before breaking to the front over the final water barrier with 150 meters remaining. She held position from there to win in 10:25.15.

Mattox was second in 10:25.15 in her heat.

Wallace, seeded 25th coming into the regional, was one of the bigger surprises of the night, finishing fourth in her heat in 10:20.33.

Lauren Crockett advanced in the women?s high jump with her seventh-place finish.

"In Turkey, people sometimes describe the untalented by saying: 'They can't even draw Cin Ali,'" Susuz said. "My artwork is a response to them. I wanted to say that even art can be made with Cin Alis."

In a series of 10 books, Cin Ali goes to school, has a pet lamb, rides a horse cart and sees a barber elephant in a circus. The stripped-down text and illustrations lack the sophistication of works by childrens' authors such as Dr. Seuss and Maurice Sendak. But there is something captivating about the spare, flowing lines that form Cin Ali's toothpick of a body, the personification of Turkey's austere past. They are vaguely evocative of the work of American artist Keith Haring, whose simple images were full of vitality.

In Cin Ali's heyday, the Turkish military presided over politics, and the books seem to reflect an authoritarian culture that Turkey, now led by an elected government whose bid to join the European Union has stalled, is still struggling to shed. Rote, blackboard learning was in force, whereas today children are also encouraged to compare and categorize.

Discovered in a coal mine in Colombia in 2005, the turtle was given the name?Carbonemys cofrinii, which means "coal turtle." It wasn't until now that the turtle was examined and described in a scientific journal; the findings are detailed online today (May 17) in the Journal of Systematic Paleontology.

The researchers say?C. cofrinii?belongs to a group of side-necked turtles known as?pelomedusoides. The turtle's skull, roughly the size of an NFL football, was the most complete of the fossil remains.

In addition to its colossal size, the turtle would have been equipped with massive, powerful jaws, meaning it could've eaten just about anything in its range, from mollusks (a?group that includes snails) to smaller turtles and?even crocodiles, the researchers noted.

Its all-encompassing appetite as well as its need for a large range to satiate its food requirements may explain why no other turtle of this size has been found at the site. [Gallery: The World's Biggest Beasts]

"It's like having one big snapping turtle living in the middle of a lake," study researcher Dan Ksepka, of North Carolina State University, said in a statement. "That turtle survives because it has eaten all of the major competitors for resources."

While the researchers have found bite marks on the remains of other side-necked turtles in the area, suggesting they were preyed upon by crocodilians, such predators would not have messed with this coal mine turtle. "In fact smaller crocs would have been easy prey for this behemoth," Ksepka said.

The researchers also discovered?a turtle shell?nearby that they believe belonged to the same species; the shell would've been large enough to double as a kiddy swimming pool, they noted, as it measured some 5 feet 7 inches (172 centimeters) across.

"We had recovered smaller turtle specimens from the site. But after spending about four days working on uncovering the shell, I realized that this particular turtle was the biggest anyone had found in this area for this time period ? and it gave us the first?evidence of gigantism?in freshwater turtles," Edwin Cadena, also of North Carolina State, said in a statement.

In fact, this big turtle appeared 5 million years after the dinosaurs vanished, at a time when gigantism was relatively common in this part of South America. For instance, the largest snake ever discovered, measuring 45 feet (14 meters) long and called?Titanoboa cerrejonensis,?lived there, also about 60 million years ago.

A combination of factors, including abundant food, fewer predators, vast habitat and climate change, would have worked together to allow turtles and other animals to balloon to such relatively gargantuan sizes, the researchers suggest.

For instance, the warm weather would've been beneficial for such ectotherms that rely on their surroundings to regulate their body temperature.

"The environment seems to have been tropical based on fossil plants found at the site," Ksepka told LiveScience. "And the turtle appears to have been adapted to spending most of its time in the water, though coming ashore to lay eggs would be part of its life cycle."

Another turtle discovered in this coal mine may have evolved an adaptation to protect itself from these giants; the turtle, called Cerrejonemys wayuunaiki,?sported an extra-thick shell, about the thickness of a high-school textbook.

The research, funded by the Smithsonian Institute and the National Science Foundation, will be detailed in the June 2012 print issue of the Journal of Systematic Paleontology.

Researchers identify protein necessary for behavioral flexibility

Researchers have identified a protein necessary to maintain behavioral flexibility, which allows us to modify our behaviors to adjust to circumstances that are similar, but not identical, to previous experiences. Their findings, which appear in the journal Cell Reports, may offer new insights into addressing autism and schizophrenia?afflictions marked by impaired behavioral flexibility.

Our stored memories from previous experiences allow us to repeat certain tasks. For instance, after driving to a particular location, we recall the route the next time we make that trip. However, sometimes circumstances change?one road on the route is temporarily closed?and we need to make adjustments to reach our destination. Our behavioral flexibility allows us to make such changes and, then, successfully complete our task. It is driven, in part, by protein synthesis, which produces experience-dependent changes in neural function and behavior.

However, this process is impaired for many, preventing an adjustment in behavior when faced with different circumstances. In the Cell Reports study, the researchers sought to understand how protein synthesis is regulated during behavioral flexibility.

To do so, they focused on the kinase PERK, an enzyme that regulates protein synthesis. PERK is known to modify eIF2alpha, a factor that is required for proper protein synthesis. Their experiments involved comparing normal lab mice, which possessed the enzyme, with those that lacked it.

In their study, the mice were asked to navigate a water maze, which included elevating themselves onto a platform to get out of the water. Normal mice and those lacking PERK learned to complete this task.

However, in a second step, the researchers tested the mice's behavioral flexibility by moving the maze's platform to another location, thereby requiring them to respond to a change in the terrain. Here, the normal mice located the platform, but those lacking PERK were unable to do so or took significantly more time to complete the task.

A second experiment offered a different test of the role of PERK in aiding behavioral flexibility. In this measure, both normal and mutant mice heard an audible tone that was followed by a mild foot shock. At this stage, all of the mice developed a normal fear response?freezing at the tone in anticipation of the foot shock. However, the researchers subsequently removed the foot shock from the procedure and the mice heard only the tone. Eventually, the normal mice adjusted their responses so they did not freeze after hearing the tone. However, the mutant mice continued to respond as if they expected a foot shock to follow.

The researchers sought additional support for their conclusion that the absence of PERK may contribute to impaired behavioral flexibility in human neurological disorders. To do so, they conducted postmortem analyses of human frontal cortex samples from patients afflicted with schizophrenia, who often exhibit behavioral inflexibility, and unaffected individuals. The samples from the control group showed normal levels of PERK while those from the schizophrenic patients had significantly reduced levels of the protein.

"A rapidly expanding list of neurological disorders and neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and Fragile X syndrome, have already been linked to aberrant protein synthesis," explained Eric Klann, a professor in NYU's Center for Neural Science and one of the study's co-authors. "Our results show the significance of PERK in maintaining behavioral flexibility and how its absence might be associated with schizophrenia. Further studies clarifying the specific role of PERK-regulated protein synthesis in the brain may provide new avenues to tackle such widespread and often debilitating neurological disorders."
