Nook HD review: a high-def tablet with the heart of a reader

DNP Nook HD review a highdef tablet with the heart of a reader

Barnes & Noble knows where it stands in the tablet race. Sure, the company has been plugging away at the space since the day the Nook Color made its transformation into a full-fledged tablet, but the Nook, it seems, is rarely mentioned in the same breath as the Kindle Fire or Nexus 7, when discussing low-cost tablets. As such, the company seems to rarely mention its devices without discussing the competition -- Amazon in particular. In fact, at the launch event for the Nook HD and HD+, reps trotted out Kindle Fire HDs at every possible opportunity.

Seeing the two devices side by side, there's no question that Nook trumps the Fire in a number of categories, and the bookseller has gone a ways toward making the Nook HD stand out in a field full of bigger players. For one thing, the device is far more focused on the reading experience than the competition, a fact reflected in both hardware and UI decisions. The company has also taken a more aggressive approach toward marketing the device toward families. The question, then, is whether these features are enough to capture marketshare from the more prominent devices. See how the Nook HD stacks up after the break.

iPad mini review

DNP iPad mini review

The iPad mini has been rumored for nearly as long as the original iPad has existed, but it wasn't clear early on how many of those rumors were based on fact and how many were based on hope. Hope, that was, for a smaller, more portable tablet that would bring access to all the Apple ecosystem had to offer, in a package you could easily hold in one hand. Specifically, a package more affordable than the 10-incher.

That's this, the 7.9-inch, $329 iPad mini that sports a screen with the same resolution as the iPad 2 -- only smaller. As we put this one through its paces it quickly became clear that this is far more than a cheaper, smaller iPad. This is a thinner, lighter device that deserves independent consideration. In many ways, it's actually better than the 10-inch slate from which it was born. But is it better for you? Join us after the break as we find out.

Houston Texans Director of Radio Broadcasting shares secrets for ...

HCC students take the classroom to the field

How does one succeed in the field of communications? Students from the HCC Intro to Mass Communications 1307 class learned just that during the latest Taking the Classroom to the Field lesson hosted by Reliant Stadium, home of the Houston Texans. Six HCC students attended a lecture and toured the radio facilities used on game days. Marc Vandermeer, Director of Radio Broadcasting for the Texans, conducted the class for this Taking the Classroom to the Field session. HCC is the official education partner of the Houston Texans and the NFL team has provided access to their facilities and personnel as part of the curriculum for classes.

This partnership provides an opportunity for students to receive mentoring from Texans employees who are experts in the areas that HCC students are studying. So far, students in Culinary Arts and now Communications have had this experience.

Vandermeer addressed the students before the tour to share his background and advice on how to succeed in communications. With a class so diverse in majors and career interests, Vandermeer was able to provide solid information about getting yourself noticed by employers. Having graduated with a degree in Mass Communications with a focus in advertising, Vandermeer did not predict that he would one day be working for the NFL, in Houston no less, a city he was once unfamiliar with.

Vandermeer said, ?No matter what, things can change on your career path.?

He continued to educate the students on the benefits of advertising during games. Since the NFL is number one in entertainment for America, television stations invest a lot of money into airing advertisements during the game. Vandermeer even reported that ESPN alone pays up to $1.8 billion for television rights during Monday Night Football. These fees help pay for the players? salaries, as well as the staff, non-football staff and facilities.

After the lecture, students had the opportunity to tour the facilities used by Vandermeer for pre and post-game interviews with the Texans players and their coach, Gary Kubiak. Vandermeer explained that the set-up is basic, but it works. The interview rooms are located across the hall from the locker room making it easier to grab a player after the game for an interview. The students even had the opportunity to wear the headsets used during radio interviews and had their conversation recorded for playback.

Hoang Doan, Engineering major at HCC?s Alief campus, said, ?Seeing the interview room broke the illusion of how complex the NFL is.?

Vandermeer concluded the tour with stressing to the students that they will go through hardships to get the job they want, but their hard work will make it worthwhile once they get there.

?What you?re passionate about is the most important thing. If you do what you love for a living, money will follow.?

Students were also advised to use networking as a means of finding a good job, and to contact Marc Vandermeer when in need of a reference. He explained that everyone you meet becomes part of your network, and gave the students his email address.

Olivia Oakes, Public Relations major and sophomore at HCC?s Alief campus, believes marketing is important and enjoyed the tour of the facilities, an opportunity she never believed would be offered by HCC.

?This corresponds with what we?ve been learning in class, which is cool,? said Oakes.

Steven Cadavid, a Mechanical Engineering student at HCC Alief, confessed that he was taking the class as an elective, but thought it would be interesting. After learning about the communication skills needed to pursue a career, and the work that goes into running a football team as taught by Vandermeer, Cadavid?s perception was changed.

Said Cadavid, ?I?ve never been in Reliant Stadium, so it was a good experience for me. I?m going to be more open-minded and talk to more people to achieve something. This was very fun and interesting.?

Carlton Abernathy, Communications Professor at HCC Central and professor of the communications 1307 class, expressed his delight over the privilege his students had to meet someone who built their own success and see behind-the-scenes of a major venue and team.

?You can?t get your head around something of this magnitude until you actually see it,? said Abernathy.

The Introduction to Mass Communication in the Electronic Environment course offered at HCC analyzes communication theory and the structure of the American communication system. The class is essentially a crash course introduction to all facets of mass media. Houston Community College?s partnership with the Texans will continue to provide more Taking the Classroom to the Field events, with the next group potentially being the Audio Visual/Filmmaking class in November.

Now that i got the intro out of the way, the game is simple. Count to 1000.

-Don't joke with decimal numbers. Only integers please.
-Try to get everyone involved, it does get rather boring when only two people are continuing the count.
-Feel free to leave a funny equation for the number (Such as 1000-999=1 and so on), even put a little joke as well. Just be a little creative if you wish. c:

Israel's Transformative Energy | Jewish & Israel News Algemeiner.com

Israeli flag in Jerusalem. Photo: IPT.

How does a mild mannered CPA from Far Rockaway, Queens grow a set of vocal cords of such power and presence that a once meek and put-upon bean counter is now a vital part of the burgeoning Jerusalem acapella scene? ?Our friend has long since traded in his faded Brooklyn Dodgers baseball cap for flowing white?sharwall pants and an effortlessly hip Brixton Hooligan Herringbone Ivy hat. The only remaining testament to a life once endured is a set of?weezer glasses, worn not so much as a statement but as an enduring tribute to one of rock ?n? roll?s seismic creative forces, Lubbock?s own Buddy Holly.

And what causes an environmental lawyer from Marin County to discard all her eco-friendly (or at least carbon neutral) possessions to hop a fume-belching El Al Boeing 747 flight with the goal of thoroughly amending her life?s trajectory? The decision to trade in her green?Prius for the unique charms of life over the Green Line most assuredly left vegan friends and hot tub lounging parents with mouths agape and tongues a-wagging. Afterall, isn?t life without easy access to Thai, Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese, Cantonese and Korean restaurants but a cruel joke?

Perhaps it?s the pale-pink light bouncing off the Old City?s ancient walls on a typical Jerusalem summer?s evening that somehow catalyzes a reaction, diffusing all reason and refracting all rational thought. Maybe it?s quite literally all in the head, with the hundreds of billions of neurons and synapses ? that had once operated firmly within the safe confines provided by calculating and comparing benefits and costs ? beginning to fire off signals in all directions once exposed to images of Israeli soldiers, Jewish children and M-16 toting babes in bikinis.

Who knows? But the phenomenon of people hitting the ?reset? button, often to the profound befuddlement of those closest to them, is at least as old as the dirt that King Solomon walked on. The roots of the Hebrew phrase?Meshaneh makom meshaneh mazal (?change your place, change your luck?) are even more ancient, perhaps going back to the biblical Abraham.

Abraham may well have been humanity?s first drop out, having abandoned home, country, family and religion for an uncertain fate in a faraway land that was only to be revealed to him by an unseen God at some undefined future date. And let?s not forget that old Abe was a virtual pensioner at the time God came a-calling. To top it off, Abraham, a strong Babylonian man of good stock, was married yet childless.

Leave behind the familiar sights and sounds of bustling Ur for? Canaan?

Now that?s confidence. For what greeted Abraham, his wife Sari and rest of his household upon arriving in Canaan was little more than a few confused sheep. A once vibrant urban society, Canaan had long since disintegrated into an utterly insignificant hodgepodge of far flung villages. In short, concerned friends and relatives may well have concluded that Abraham (or Abram) was perhaps in the midst of a mid-life crisis and would benefit from a Thorazine drip and some time off.

Abraham, however, was driven by an insatiable impulse, ignited by a divine spark. Today, Israel remains a catalyst for profound change. What draws Jews from Calgary to Johannesburg ? born, bred and educated in lands with virtually no historical, linguistic, religious or cultural connection to Israel ? to take the plunge?

Many rationalizations come to mind. However, behind the colorful?Nefesh B?Nefesh ad campaigns, Talmudic quotations, Biblical justifications and historic bonds of memory, perhaps the reason that Jewish people are attracted to Israel is the prospect of finally reaching a state of inner calm. For the silky smooth suits provided by living in certain progressive, free and affluent gentile lands ultimately prevent us from wholly living in our Jewish skin.

Israel may not shine in the light of unprecedented prosperity. Israel may not be blessed with the safety provided by surrounding oceans or accommodating neighbors. In fact, life in Israel can often leave one in dire need of a Thorazine drip ? and some time off.

However, the nation that essentially began as the vision of a solitary Babylonian today exudes unsurpassed warmth and a powerful ability to reinvent.

Samsung TecTiles 3.0 update offers more options for NFC tagging, now available in Play Store

Samsung TecTiles 30 announced

Samsung's NFC tagging app -- known as TecTiles -- made its official debut in June, but the company isn't putting a halt to its progression anytime soon. This morning Sammy announced version 3.0 of the app, which includes various enhancements that allow for better customization. Among the new features, you can choose from a larger selection of settings that can be programmed into the tags, and you'll also have the ability to send pre-written emails to a specified address, update your Google+ status, store a history of your profiles, customize preloaded profiles and create private tags that can only be read by your phone. The new refresh is ready to go in the Play Store, so head on over to download it for free -- provided, of course, you've forked over $15 for a pack of five tags. The press release, along with a full list of supported devices, can be found past the break.

Ex-Goldman exec given 2 years for inside trades

NEW YORK (AP) ? A former Goldman Sachs and Procter & Gamble Co. board member once widely respected worldwide for his business smarts was sentenced Wednesday to 2 years in prison for feeding inside information about board dealings with a billionaire hedge fund owner who was his friend.

Rajat Gupta, 63, of Westport, Conn., was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Jed Rakoff, who also ordered him to pay a $5 million fine. The Harvard-educated businessman long respected on Wall Street was one of the biggest catches yet for the federal government in its five-year crackdown on insider trading that has so far resulted in 69 convictions.

Gupta was ordered to report to prison on Jan. 8.

Reading from a statement, he said: "The last 18 months have been the most challenging period of my life since I lost my parents as a teenager.

"I regret terribly the impact of this matter on my family, my friends and the institutions that are dear to me. I've lost my reputation I built for a lifetime. The verdict was devastating."

The dealings by Gupta that were highlighted at his spring trial stemmed from his relationship with Sri Lanka-born Raj Rajaratnam. The one-time billionaire hedge fund boss controlled up to $7 billion in accounts, giving him a firm footprint in the financial markets and influence that impressed someone as widely regarded as Gupta.

"His conduct has forever tarnished a once-sterling reputation that took years to cultivate," U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said after sentencing. "We hope that others who might consider breaking the securities laws will take heed from this sad occasion and choose not to follow in Mr. Gupta's footsteps."

Prosecutors described how Gupta raced to telephone Rajaratnam with stock tips sometimes only seconds after getting them from board conference calls, allowing Rajaratnam to make more than $11 million in illegal profits for him and his investors. Rajaratnam is serving an 11-year prison sentence after his conviction at trial last year.

The narrower insider trading case against Rajaratnam and his co-conspirators resulted in 26 convictions and was described by Bharara as the biggest insider trading case in history, successful in part because of unprecedented use of wiretaps more familiar to juries at mob and drug trials.

Prosecutors say Rajaratnam earned up to $75 million illegally through his trades while Gupta's attorneys point out that their client earned no profits.

At trial, Gupta was convicted of three counts of securities fraud and one count of conspiracy, insider trading charges that prosecutors said should result in a prison sentence of up to 10 years in prison.

The judge said a prison sentence was necessary to send a message to insider traders that "when you get caught, you will go to jail."

Defense attorney Gary Naftalis immediately promised to appeal, telling Rakoff he wants Gupta free pending appealing. The judge did not immediately rule on the request.

Prosecutors accused Gupta, a former chief of the global consulting firm McKinsey & Co. and a onetime director of the huge consumer products company Procter & Gamble, of "above-the-law arrogance" in feeding Rajaratnam inside tips between March 2007 and January 2009.

Goldman Sachs chairman Lloyd Blankfein testified at trial that Gupta appeared to have violated the investment bank's confidentiality policies.

"Gupta's crimes are shocking," the government wrote. "Gupta's crimes are extraordinarily serious and damaging to the capital markets. ... It understandably fuels cynicism among the investing public that Wall Street is rigged and that Wall Street professionals unfairly exploit privileged access to information. This is particularly troubling at a time when there is widespread concern about corruption, greed and recklessness at the highest levels of the financial services industry."

In their presentencing brief, defense lawyers cited Gupta's many good deeds worldwide, saying they were unusual enough to warrant a sentence of probation with instructions to perform community service.

Naftalis told the judge that Gupta had "one of the best reputations on the planet. His loss of reputation is severely strong punishment."

The defense noted that the Rwandan government supported a program in which Gupta would work with rural districts to fight HIV, malaria and extreme poverty and to help provide food security. The lawyers said the Rwandan government would join with a U.S.-based organization already working in the country to ensure effective supervision of Gupta's service.

They also said prison would spoil the efforts by Gupta, who was born in Kolkata, India, to develop new initiatives, including the Urban Institute of India, meant to bring the private sector, academia and the Indian government together to address accelerating migration to India's cities. The more than 400 letters written to the judge on Gupta's behalf included documents signed by Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

"The conduct for which he was convicted represents an isolated aberration and a stark departure from this personal history," the lawyers wrote.

At Gupta's trial, which began in May, the government highlighted a Sept. 23, 2008, phone call it said was made from Gupta to Rajaratnam only minutes after Gupta had learned during a confidential conference call about Warren Buffett's planned investment through Berkshire Hathaway of $5 billion in Goldman.

Moments after the phone call ended at 3:55 p.m., Rajaratnam purchased $40 million in Goldman stock ? an 11th hour trade that ended up making him nearly $1 million ? at the height of the financial crisis that had engulfed the country.

In another recorded phone call in 2008, Rajaratnam told one of his traders that he had got a tip "from someone who's on the board of Goldman Sachs" that Goldman was facing an unexpected quarterly loss.

Gupta, prosecutors said, was motivated to help Rajaratnam because he had a financial stake in some of the hedge fund manager's business ventures.

Public, former colleagues pay tribute to McGovern

(AP) ? Family, friends and former colleagues are filing into a Sioux Falls, S.D., church to pay their respects to former senator and Democratic presidential candidate George McGovern.

Vice President Joe Biden is among the hundreds of well-wishers and politicians who are expected to attend Thursday's public viewing and prayer service for McGovern. Biden served in the U.S. Senate with McGovern in the 1970s and early '80s.

McGovern died Sunday at age 90. He was a political legend in his home state and was very involved in efforts to feed the hungry.

About two dozen people lined up before the church opened for the chance to walk past McGovern's open, flag-draped casket. Two uniformed men stood at attention next to the casket.

McGovern's funeral is Friday in Sioux Falls.

PFT: A 'Free Sean Payton' photo op with Goodell

Washington Redskins v New York GiantsGetty Images

Week Seven was a very lucky week for yours truly.? With an unlucky 13 games on the schedule, I got 12 of them correct, with only a late comeback from the Titans blocking an unprecedented piece of perfection.

More importantly, MDS and I disagreed on three games.? Thanks to the Cowboys, Saints, and Colts, my two-game season-to-date lead has been extended to five games.

For the year, I?m now 67-37, and MDS is 62-42.

MDS will join Thursday?s PFT Live to discuss this week?s picks.? There will be no gloating.

At least not by him.

Buccaneers at Vikings

MDS?s take: After I was burned by picking the Bucs last week on the way to going 0-for-3 on games where I disagreed with Florio, I?m playing it safe this week. Tampa Bay still looks to me like a team that?s headed in the right direction, but right now the Vikings have too much for the Bucs on both sides of the ball and should win this one comfortably.

MDS?s pick: Vikings 27, Buccaneers 13.

Florio?s take:? The Vikings get a chance to show how different they are this year against one of the teams to whom the Vikings blew a big halftime lead last year.? This time, if the Vikings are up by 10 or more at the break, look for them to close it out with a defense that finally is good enough to hold leads.

Florio?s pick:? Vikings 21, Buccaneers 19.

Panthers at Bears

MDS?s take: Cam Newton is going to bounce back from this slump he?s in eventually. He?s too talented not to. But the Bears are the wrong team for a young quarterback to bounce back against. Chicago?s relentless pressure will force a few turnovers and lead to another loss for the Panthers.

MDS?s pick: Bears 20, Panthers 10.

Florio?s take:? Rattled by the ouster of G.M. Marty Hurney, racked by injuries, and reeling from the sad-sack demeanor of Cam Newton, the Panthers are poised to get plastered.

Florio?s pick:? Bears 31, Panthers 10.

Chargers at Browns

MDS?s take: The Chargers have had two weeks to lick their wounds after that disastrous Monday night meltdown against the Broncos. They?ll come in to Cleveland focused and motivated and win this one comfortably.

MDS?s pick: Chargers 31, Browns 17.

Florio?s take:? If Mike Holmgren?s current team can knock off the Chargers, the Chargers could be Mike Holmgren?s next team.? Though a house-cleaning could still be coming, the Chargers will likely do enough to reverse a bad two weeks of blown leads and stickum, allegedly.

Florio?s pick:? Chargers 24, Browns 17.

Seahawks at Lions

MDS?s take: Mistakes keep killing the Lions, whether it?s penalties, turnovers or special teams coverage breakdowns. If the Lions could get out of their own way they could go on a run down the stretch and still contend for a wild card berth, but that doesn?t look likely at this point. Seattle is the team that looks like a playoff contender, and the Seahawks will take another step in that direction with a win on the road.

MDS?s pick: Seahawks 17, Lions 14.

Florio?s take:? If this one were set for Seattle, it would be a no brainer.? In Detroit, the Seahawks have an opportunity to prove that they?re capable of beating better-than-bad teams in a place other than CenturyLink Field.

Florio?s pick:? Seahawks 17, Lions 16.

Jaguars at Packers

MDS?s take: In the biggest mismatch of the week, the Jaguars? offense will look even worse than usual without Maurice Jones-Drew, and Aaron Rodgers will have his third consecutive huge game.

MDS?s pick: Packers 34, Jaguars 3.

Florio?s take:? The Packers have never beaten the Jaguars at Lambeau Field.? Then again, these teams have played there only once.? The Jags will want to forget their second trip to town.

Florio?s pick:? Packers 45, Jaguars 21.

Dolphins at Jets

MDS?s take: I?m impressed that the Jets aren?t going down without a fight. When they lost Darrelle Revis and got blown out by the 49ers, I figured the Jets were finished, but they?ve played good football for the last three weeks, even if they have only one win to show for it in those three games. The Jets will beat the Dolphins in a low-scoring game and get back to .500.

MDS?s pick: Jets 13, Dolphins 10.

Florio?s take:? Despite the injuries and the ineffectiveness and the uncertainty, the Jets have improved over the past few weeks.? They?re good enough to complete the sweep of a Dolphins team that has improved even more discreetly.

Florio?s pick:? Jets 30, Dolphins 20.

Falcons at Eagles

MDS?s take: The Eagles know their backs are against the wall, and the Falcons have been scraping by with three straight close wins. This looks to me like the day when the Falcons? luck runs out, and the last unbeaten team in the league gets beaten.

MDS?s pick: Eagles 24, Falcons 21.

Florio?s take:? Andy Reid is 13-0 after the bye week.? Sometimes, there?s no need for elaboration.

Florio?s pick:? Eagles 24, Falcons 23.

Redskins at Steelers

MDS?s take: The Steelers took a big step toward the playoffs with last week?s win in Cincinnati, and I like them to keep it going against the Redskins. Look for Steelers tight end Heath Miller to have a big game against the Redskins? defense, just as Giants tight end Martellus Bennett, Vikings tight end Kyle Rudolph and Falcons tight end Tony Gonzalez have in the Redskins? last three games.

MDS?s pick: Steelers 28, Redskins 27.

Florio?s take:? The Steelers are 20-2-1 at Heinz Field against NFC teams.? But Heinz Field has never seen anything like RG3, who?ll run circles around a Polamalu-free Pittsburgh defense.

Florio?s pick:? Redskins 23, Steelers 20.

Patriots at Rams

MDS?s take: The Rams? secondary has been playing well and the Patriots? secondary has been leaving receivers wide open, and I?m tempted to pick the upset for that reason. But with Danny Amendola hurt I don?t think the Rams have the ammunition to take advantage of the Patriots? problems on defense, and I think New England?s running game can churn up yardage at Wembley Stadium and lead the Patriots to a low-scoring win.

MDS?s pick: Patriots 16, Rams 10.

Florio?s take:? The team whose name pays homage to the men who kicked the butts of the Brits like to kick butt in Britain.? Though it won?t be a blowout like it was three years ago against the Bucs, the Pats should be able to build a fourth-quarter lead.? And hold it.? For a change.

Florio?s pick:? Patriots 27, Rams 21.

Colts at Titans

MDS?s take: Titans running back Chris Johnson took advantage of a bad Bills defense last week, and he should be able to take advantage of a bad Colts defense this week. Johnson will go for about 150 yards and the Colts? offense won?t be able to keep up.

MDS?s pick: Titans 28, Colts 21.

Florio?s take:? The winner of this one won?t likely challenge the Texans for the division crown but would be very much alive for a wild-card berth.? The Titans continue their knack for playing in ? and winning ? exciting games.

Florio?s pick:? Titans 27, Colts 24.

Raiders at Chiefs

MDS?s take: I?m not a believer in Brady Quinn as the Chiefs? long-term answer at quarterback, but as a short-term fix who won?t turn the ball over as often as Matt Cassel, Quinn should be able to lead Kansas City to a home win over a bad team.

MDS?s pick: Chiefs 20, Raiders 16.

Florio?s take:? Oakland has won five straight times at Arrowhead Stadium.? With an extra week to prepare and everyone on the hot seat, if the Chiefs don?t beat the Raiders at home now, they possibly never will.

Florio?s pick:? Chiefs 24, Raiders 10.

Giants at Cowboys

MDS?s take: Completing a season sweep of the Giants would go a long way toward getting the Cowboys into playoff contention, but I don?t see it happening. The Cowboys? defense will miss linebacker Sean Lee, Giants quarterback Eli Manning will have a big day, and the Giants will improve to 4-0 all time at Cowboys Stadium.

MDS?s pick: Giants 31, Cowboys 20.

Florio?s take:? The Cowboys aren?t nearly as good as they were in Week One, when they beat the Giants in New Jersey.? The Giants are the same, but this time they won?t get complacent.

Florio?s pick:? Giants 35, Cowboys 27.

Saints at Broncos

MDS?s take: Two future Hall of Fame quarterbacks will be on the field in Denver, but Drew Brees has to play against a good Broncos secondary, while Peyton Manning gets to play against a terrible Saints secondary. Advantage Peyton.

MDS?s pick: Broncos 42, Saints 21.

Florio?s take:? When he was the head coach of the Panthers, John Fox held his own against Sean Payton?s Saints.? This time, Fox has a great quarterback ? and the Saints don?t have Payton.

Florio?s pick:? Broncos 38, Saints 28.

49ers at Cardinals

MDS?s take: The Cardinals? great start to the season may come to a screeching halt on Monday night.? A home loss to a division rival would be tough for Arizona to overcome, and a win at Arizona will be another step for the 49ers toward establishing themselves as the clear favorites to win the NFC West.

MDS?s pick: 49ers 20, Cardinals 13.

Florio?s take:? Once atop the NFC West, the Cardinals are close to completing their slide to the basement.? Blame it on the lack of a high-end quarterback and an offensive line to protect him.

Florio?s pick:? 49ers 24, Cardinals 13.

5 Fabulous Fall Cocktail Recipes from Gramercy Tavern in NYC ...

Slideshow

Think fall cocktails and almost instinctively visions of apples and pears, cinnamon and nutmeg, bourbon and rye come rushing in. At Danny Meyer's landmark dining institution, Gramercy Tavern, such seasonal expectations are met with a lineup of drinks that breathe new life into familiar flavors.

At Gramercy, the bar team focuses on creating fall cocktails that make great aperitifs and are food friendly, explains beverage director Juliette Pope. While complex in their depth and harmony of flavors, these cocktails are also remarkably easy to make. For the most part, you simply need to stir a few key ingredients until cold, strain, and sip to feel the warming effects.

Want to get started? Check out the slideshow for 5 make-at-home recipes.

California surfer dies after shark attack

(CNN) ?

A surfer died Tuesday after a shark bit him off the coast of a Southern California air force base, authorities said.

Francisco Javier Solorio Jr., 39, was riding waves Tuesday morning with three friends when he was bitten, according to Santa Barbara Sheriff's Office.

One of the friends saw the attack, swam over and pulled Solorio out of the water and onto the beach, Sgt. Mark Williams with the sheriff's office said. The friend gave him first aid while another called for help, he said.

Paramedics pronounced Solorio dead at the scene, the sheriff's office said.

The four friends were surfing at Surf Beach, located on the Vandenberg Air Force Base, whose fire department responded to the emergency call, authorities said.

Solorio, who was from Orcutt, just two miles from Vandenberg, wasn't affiliated with the military base, said a Vandenberg spokeswoman.

Authorities say the surf board showed bite marks, the military base said.

The type of shark hadn't been identified as of Tuesday afternoon, and that base beach was closed until further notice, authorities said.

On October 22, 2010 -- a day short of a two-year anniversary -- another shark attack killed a 19-year-old college student off the same beach at Vandenberg.

That shark, described as being 14 to 20 feet, bit off the left leg of Lucas McKaine Ransom of Romoland, California, while he was Boogie Boarding with a 20-year-old male friend, authorities said.

Leaders push for more jobs in Virginia

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT)- A new partnership could mean more jobs for college grads and more business opportunities for companies considering Virginia.??

All public universities in the state are joining forces with state economic leaders to say "yes" to Virginia. This program even involves the white house. One of the organizers met with President Obama to work out the details.

Like most college seniors, Marketing Major Ibrahim Althwaini is thinking about life after graduation. He's from Saudi Arabia, but would like to work in Virginia but that means finding a good job:

"These opportunities ? I'm sure everyone would appreciate them in Richmond," said Althwaini. "We need that.??

Now his school could help grow the jobs for their graduates. A joint marketing plan brings together economic developers and public colleges to bring new business to Virginia, and expand the ones already here.?

"The idea is to bring universities together on an economic development platform so we can have a bigger footprint in the marketplace and talk about Virginia globally," said Virginia Economic Development Partnership President and CEO, Martin Briley.

The focus is to combine the strengths of business - and Virginia's graduates - a collaboration of the best the state has to offer. One key example is a Rolls Royce plant that opened in Prince George.?

"That's a great example of universities working with VEDP economic development locally and state-wide to come up with a reason for Rolls Royce to come here beyond the normal," said Secretary of Commerce and Trade James Cheng.??

Governor Bob McDonnell has added $230 million to the biennial budget to support public universities and incentives to research target areas that could bring top jobs to Virginia.??

Now it's up to state and education leaders to pass the word along to companies and give them a good reason to open up shop in Virginia.??

The agreement will be in effect until June of 2014.

Neuroscientists propose revolutionary DNA-based approach to map wiring of whole brain

ScienceDaily (Oct. 23, 2012) ? A team of neuroscientists has proposed a new and potentially revolutionary way of obtaining a neuronal connectivity map (the "connectome") of the whole brain of the mouse. The details are set forth in an essay published October 23 in the open-access journal PLOS Biology.

The team, led by Professor Anthony Zador, Ph.D., of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, aims to provide a comprehensive account of neural connectivity. At present the only method for obtaining this information with high precision relies on examining individual cell-to-cell contacts (synapses) in electron microscopes. But such methods are slow, expensive and labor-intensive.

Zador and colleagues instead propose to exploit high-throughput DNA sequencing to probe the connectivity of neural circuits at the resolution of single neurons.

"Our method renders the connectivity problem in a format in which the data are readable by currently available high-throughput genome sequencing machines," says Zador. "We propose to do this via a process we're now developing, called BOINC: the barcoding of individual neuronal connections."

The proposal comes at a time when a number of scientific teams in the U.S. are progressing in their efforts to map connections in the mammalian brain. These efforts use injections of tracer dyes or viruses to map neuronal connectivity at a "mesoscopic" scale -- a mid-range resolution that makes it possible to follow neural fibers between brain regions. Other groups are scaling up approaches based on electron microscopy.

Zador's team wants to trace connectivity "beyond the mesoscopic," at the level of synaptic contacts between pairs of individual neurons, throughout the brain. The BOINC barcoding technique, now undergoing proof-of-concept testing, will be able, says Zador, "to provide immediate insight into the computations that a circuit performs." In practice, he adds, most neural computations are not currently understood at this level of precision, partly because detailed circuit information is not available for mammals. The BOINC method promises to be much faster and cheaper than approaches based on electron microscopy, Zador says.

The BOINC method consists of three steps. First, each neuron is labeled with a specific DNA barcode. A barcode consisting of just 20 random DNA "letters" can uniquely label a trillion neurons -- many more than exist in the mouse brain.

The second step looks at neurons that are synaptically connected, and associates their respective barcodes with one other. One way to do this is by exploiting a virus such as the pseudorabies virus, which can move genetic material across synapses.

"To share barcodes across synapses, the virus must be engineered to carry the barcode within its own genetic sequence," explains Zador. "After the virus spreads across synapses, each neuron effectively ends up as a bag of barcodes, comprising its own code and those from synaptically coupled partners."

The third step involves joining barcodes from synaptically connected neurons to make single pieces of DNA, which can then be read via existing high-throughput DNA sequencing methods. These double-barcode sequences can then be analyzed computationally to reveal the synaptic wiring diagram of the brain.

Taken together, says Zador, if BOINC succeeds in its current proof-of-concept tests, it will offer a dramatically inexpensive and rapid means of assembling a connectome, even of the complex brains of mammals.

How Much Sex Is Too Much Sex? | Greatist

Maybe you?ve skipped dinner and gone straight for dessert before, but if you?re skipping meals (and other vital things) to have sex instead, you might be having too much of it. While science suggests?sex can?improve mood and decrease anxiety?by?reducing stress?signals in the brain, it?s possible doing the deed can interfere with leading a healthy life[]. Don?t get us wrong ? sex is a normal, healthy, fun part of adult life. In fact, Greatist Expert Ian Kerner says sexual attraction and sexual compatibility are the basis of many successful relationships. Thinking with our nether regions may be natural, but continually acting on those thoughts while the laundry piles up for weeks may be a sign of a sexy-time dilemma. So how much sex is normal, and how much is too much?

Sex Rx ? Why It Matters

Bed PostLet?s break down the deets between the sheets. According to the Kinsey Institute, 18- to 29-year-olds have sex an average of 112 times per year, while 30 to 39-year-olds do the deed (on average) 69 times per year (what a convenient number). So if that?s average, what?s healthy? Kerner says most couples in a relationship should be having sex at least once per week. And couples therapist?Dr. Barry McCarthy agrees that once or twice a week makes for a healthy sex life. During the infatuation stage (also known as the honeymoon stage, when two people can?t stop thinking about each other) couples often have sex every time they?re together, Kerner says. And when couples first move in together, the frequency of sex increases (but only temporarily)[].

With all that, err, gyrating, sex can get a bit uncomfortable. (Let?s just say our bodies can?t exactly stay lubricated indefinitely.) If there?s pain or numbness, it?s smart to slow down or bag it for the night. Using lubricant can make for more pleasurable sex, and can actually help ensure safe sex because it makes condoms less likely to break. Lubricants also allow cut down on that painful friction. Whether a marathon or a quickie, sex should be fun, and most definitely shouldn?t cause bodily damage.

Let?s Get It On (But Not Too Much) ? The Answer Debate

It may be a cue to hop out of bed when sex?gets in the way of leading a normal, healthy life.?Having nookie through breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and skipping out on the 9-5 just because you?d rather shag like Austin Powers can become problematic if it happens on a regular basis. (But seriously, sex addiction can be a real problem, so if your sexual habits are getting in the way of day-to-day life, it?s best to consult a doctor or therapist.)

At the end of the day, it comes down to quality over quantity. Having a ton of sex doesn?t mean it?s too much, so long as both partners enjoy it, Kerner says. If one partner is much more satisfied than the other (read: one is having more orgasms than the other), than sex can feel like a daunting chore.

There?s no ?right? way to go about sex, and preferred amount can vary from person to person. For a fulfilling sex life that?s juuuuuust right, it?s helpful to be honest and open about how frequently you?d like to get jiggy with it. One study found?couples who communicate about sex ? especially during the act ? are more sexually satisfied. If it feels like too much (either physically or emotionally), let your partner know you need a break. Sex can be dangerous if there?s any sort of pressure or force to do something you don?t want to do.

Just remember compromise is key: Instead of singling one person out for how much or how little they want sex, research suggests assessing the couple as a whole and that meeting in the middle can be helpful[]. As funny and un-sexy as it sounds, it may even be smart to schedule sex so the lower libido partner doesn?t feel pressured, and the higher libido partner doesn?t feel rejected[]. Our hunger to get frisky comes and goes, and successful couples need to manage those ups and downs. Sometimes libidos will be matched, but when they?re not Kerner says we need to take responsibility for our sexuality, by enjoying ourselves by ourselves. ?Masturbation is an important aspect to a healthy life. If you have a higher libido, masturbate more,? he says.

Thanks to Greatist Expert Dr. Ian Kerner and Dr. Barry McCarthy for their help with this article.

Why didn't Obama send military help in Libya?

Posted By Uncle Jimbo ? [October 22, 2012]

Now there is a very interesting question that could actually come up during tonight's Presidential debate. CBS News has a devastating report about what was known about the attack while it was happening.

CBS News has been told that, hours after the attack began, an unmanned Predator drone was sent over the U.S. mission in Benghazi, and that the drone and other reconnaissance aircraft apparently observed the final hours of the protracted battle.

The State Department, White House and Pentagon declined to say what military options were available. A White House official told CBS News that, at the start of the attack, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Martin Dempsey and Defense Secretary Leon Panetta "looked at available options, and the ones we exercised had our military forces arrive in less than 24 hours, well ahead of timelines laid out in established policies."

But it was too late to help the Americans in Benghazi. The ambassador and three others were dead.

A White House official tries to throw Gen Dempsey and Sec. Panetta under the bus but it is crowded and Bill Clinton is in the way trying to pull Hillary out. They could have had F-18s on station in hours and this has been an effective way to drive terror-clowns off in both Iraq and Afghaistan. They aloso could have had door-kickers there in hours as well, they just didn't. This is gonna get ugly, well uglier. They did nothing and watched on a drone feed hoping that the situation would change, but campaign slogans don't save lives. That takes making an actual gutsy call and as it turns out the Osama-slayer didn't have time to poll this one, so he loaded up AF one and flew to Vegas.

This is a CBS News report and the moderator for tonight is Bob Schieffer from CBS News. I really have to believe that this question gets asked. But of course it is possible they decide this would be too damaging for the chosen one. Good gut check for the media. My money says they launch on Barry, and that this is the beginning of the end.

Company that paid Lance Armstrong's winnings wants money back

SCA Promotions, the company that paid cyclist Lance Armstrong $12 million in all for winning the Tour de France, said Monday it was considering legal action.

A Texas promotional company that paid millions of dollars to?Lance Armstrong?for winning the Tour de?France?said on Monday it was considering legal action to get the money back after the American cyclist was stripped of his Tour titles.

Armstrong had his seven Tour de?France?victories nullified and was banned for life on Monday after the?International Cycling Union?(UCI) ratified the?United States Anti-Doping Agency's (USADA) sanctions against him.

Dallas-based SCA Promotions paid Armstrong $7.5 million for winning his sixth Tour title in 2004 - $5 million as a performance bonus and $2.5 million in interest and attorney fees - as part of a 2006 legal settlement. Armstrong had sued SCA when it withheld the payment after doping allegations against him surfaced.

Tailwind Sports, the owner of Armstrong's US Postal team, had promised the cyclist a $5 million bonus if he won a sixth Tour title and it took out insurance coverage with SCA.

In all, SCA Promotions paid Armstrong some $12 million, the company's lawyer?Jeffrey Dorough?said.

It was unclear exactly how much SCA may seek to recover.

"Mr. Armstrong is no longer the official winner of any Tour de?France?races, and as a result it is inappropriate and improper for him to retain any bonus payments made by SCA," Dorough said in a statement.

He said SCA Promotions was "digesting the UCI's decision" and that the company was taking into consideration the possibility that Armstrong or the?World Anti-Doping Agency?could appeal.

Earlier this month, USADA published a report on Armstrong that said the now-retired rider had been involved in the "most sophisticated, professionalized and successful doping program that sport has ever seen."

"I was sickened by what I read in the USADA report," UCI President?Pat McQuaid?said on Monday.

Armstrong, 41, who has denied doping, had previously elected not to contest the USADA charges, prompting USADA to propose his punishment pending confirmation from cycling's world governing body.

Armstrong, widely considered one of the greatest cyclists of all time, says he has never failed a doping test.

He said he had stopped contesting the charges after years of probes and rumors because "there comes a point in every man's life when he has to say, 'Enough is enough.'"
