We knew it was only a matter of time until Apple responded to Google?s new Chromecast, and now Cupertino has returned fire, sort of. Apple silently sliced $10 of the cost of a refurbished Apple TV today, dropping the price from $85 to $75, while the cost of a new device is still $99. It?s a small price cut, and it certainly doesn?t make the refurbished TV streamer competitive with Google?s $35 price point.
A refurbished Apple TV may cost over twice as much as a new Chromecast, but the set-top box still boasts a lot more features and viewing options than Google?s new device. Apple TV offers dedicated channels for online streaming services Netflix, Hulu Plus, HBO GO, YouTube and Vimeo, as well as sports channels such as ESPN, MLB, NBA and NHL. You can also watch anything purchased or rented through iTunes on your TV through the device, and stream anything from your Mac, iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch using AirPlay.
The Chromecast, meanwhile, is seriously lacking when it comes to options, though its open SDK means more will likely come in the future. For now though, the device only works with Android and iOS devices and is only supported by YouTube and Netflix, or through a Chrome browser on your computer. Streaming from your desktop means you can watch pretty much anything you want, though not as easily as on an Apple TV. Still, for its budget-friendly $35 price tag the Chromecast is definitely worth considering.
