The woman, Marion Salmon Hedges, was listed in critical but stable condition at New York City's Harlem Hospital.

Hedges was walking with her 14-year-old son outside a Target store in East Harlem on Sunday when the cart fell on her. The mother of two had just bought candy at Costco to give to trick-or-treaters, the New York Daily News reported. Her son, who witnessed the attack, wasn't injured.

The two young suspects were charged in Family Court as juveniles, the New York Post reported.

Police don?t believe that the boys were targeting Hedges, the Daily News reported.

Earlier in the day, the boys had been part of a group tossing slushees over a railing outside Target, police said, according to the Post.

Hedges volunteers at a local neighborhood center, and is also active in her church, the newspaper reported.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
