The people in the United States have been known for their philanthropic ways for decades. The different techniques used have ranged from nationally sponsored charity events to individuals selling candy and pecans to raise money for their favorite causes. Giving has always been a staple of the American culture. Lately however, there have been some new and exciting methods attempted in the states that have seen some surprising successes in charitable giving.

There have been three new techniques used in recent years that have been amazingly successful in their simplicity. Specialty license plates in the USA have become exceptionally popular. 26 states have adopted a novel approach to fundraising and developed specialty license plates for Breast Cancer. Specialty license plates can range in price upwards of $75 dollars. The sales of plates for breast cancer awareness generated a whopping $4.1 million dollars.

Another intriguing method used was to include a place on the tax forms of 18 states that allowed tax payers to allocate a portion of their refunds to breast cancer programs. This novel idea provided both charitable benefits towards breast cancer research and prevention programs and also provided the tax payers with an additional deduction on their taxes ? a clear win for both. This method pulled in an average of $115,000 dollars per state. Research shows that 18 states utilize the income tax form as a method of donation. The states allow taxpayers to donate some of their refund to Breast Cancer programs; these activities were reported to have collected around $115,000 per state.

One of the more unique ideas came from the state of Illinois. Illinois decided that if the lottery can be used as a means to generate dollars for the state, why not for breast cancer? A clever and amazingly profitable idea ? that lottery by itself has raised a whopping $7.4 million dollars in a four year span of time. Researchers at Brown School of Social Work stated that methodologies such as the ones mentioned here can be a successful strategy for states to raise money for prevention and early detection programs.
